Wood vs. Composite: Which Deck Material Is Right for Your Home?

Choosing between wood and composite decking? Bello Services breaks down costs, maintenance, durability, and looks.

About Wood vs. Composite for Your Deck

Building a new deck is one of the most rewarding home improvement projects you can undertake. It adds valuable living space, increases your home’s resale value, and creates the perfect spot for summer barbecues, morning coffee, and evening relaxation. But before you break ground, you have a big decision to make: Wood or Composite?

At Bello Services, we install both materials, and we have no bias toward one over the other. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. The right choice depends on your budget, your lifestyle, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. Here is our honest, detailed breakdown to help you decide.

The Case for Wood Decking (Pressure-Treated & Cedar)

Wood has been the traditional choice for decks for decades, and for good reason.

Cost:

Wood is significantly cheaper upfront. Pressure-treated pine is the most affordable option, while cedar and redwood cost a bit more but offer natural beauty. If you have a tight budget but want a large deck, wood is the clear winner.

Look:

Many homeowners love the natural grain, warmth, and character of real wood. Cedar has a beautiful reddish-brown hue that weathers to a silvery gray if left untreated. Pressure-treated wood can be stained any color you like, giving you complete design flexibility.

Repairability: If a wood board gets damaged—say, from a dropped grill or a rotting spot—it’s easy to replace a single plank. You can also sand down scratches and refinish the surface.

The Downside of Wood: Wood requires annual maintenance. You must clean, stain, and seal it every one to two years to prevent splintering, warping, cracking, and rot. In humid climates, wood decks are prone to mold and mildew. Over time, even well-maintained wood will show wear. Expect a lifespan of 10 to 15 years with diligent care.

Our Recommendation

Choose Wood if:

  • You love the natural look and feel of real wood.
  • You are handy and don’t mind annual staining and sealing.
  • You are working with a strict budget and want the most square footage for your money.
  • You plan to move within 10 years and don’t need the deck to last forever.

Choose Composite if:

  • You want a “set it and forget it” deck that requires minimal upkeep.
  • You live in a humid or rainy climate where rot is a concern.
  • You have children or pets who play on the deck (no splinters).
  • You plan to stay in your home for 20+ years and want a long-term investment.

The Bello Services Installation Process

No matter which material you choose, proper installation is critical. A poorly built deck is dangerous and won’t last. At Bello Services, we follow a rigorous process:

  1. Site Assessment: We inspect your home’s foundation, soil conditions, and local building codes.
  2. Design: We work with you to design a deck that fits your space, style, and budget. We can incorporate stairs, railings, built-in seating, and lighting.
  3. Permits: We handle all necessary permits and inspections so you don’t have to.
  4. Footings: We dig deep footings below the frost line to prevent heaving and ensure stability.
  5. Framing: We use pressure-treated lumber for the frame, even if you choose composite decking, because the frame needs to be rot-resistant.
  6. Decking Installation: We install the deck boards with hidden fasteners for a clean, screw-free surface.
  7. Finishing: We add railings, stairs, and any custom features. For wood decks, we apply a high-quality stain and sealer.
